Single Stage Units run at full capacity all the time cooling your home at full blast. The compressor of these units is either on or off.
Energy consumption increases when the AC turns on and off continuosly. That is why these units are less efficient than two stage or variable speed units.
There are several factors to determine wheter you should go with a single-speed unit or not. For instance, if you will use your property as a short-term rental unit, it makes sense to go with a single stage unit. If you are planning to move out soon, you might also consider a cost effective unit.
